Google plus

I begged an invite from a friend, anxious to try the latest trend. Google+ is still in beta, but I have a sense that it’s going to change the social media landscape.

Two things that I like about it immediately?

  1. The circles concept, which allows the user to put people into categories. One can then set privacy settings for the categories. Facebook does allow you to assign people to groups, but it doesn’t seem to be as intuitive as G+.
  2. The ability to follow a person, similar to following someone on Twitter. I find this to be a useful feature, especially for business. What are the people in your industry saying and doing? It’s easy to find out.

Have you tried Google+ yet?

I like the idea behind Google+ (Circles are much more functional than Friend Lists on Facebook). However, I think Google+ will have a harder time pulling in users because despite Facebook’s flaws, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of people looking to leave like they did when Facebook was competing with MySpace. However, if Google+ keeps offering smarter, easier to use tools like Circles, it’s only a matter of time before they takeover as the new king of social media.

You’re right, Brian, I think it will be harder to get people to leave Facebook than it was to get them to leave MySpace. I’m not on Google + as much as I’m on Facebook, simply because it feels a little like a half-empty arena! It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Google’s eventual social media domination does seem inevitable. (I feel like Darth Vader telling Luke Skywalker: “It is pointless to resist, my son!”) :)
